Severe Flooding in Mozambique – We Are Helping!
Relentless rain and overflowing rivers have caused severe damage in many regions Mozambique over the past weeks.
Homes and huts have been partially or completely destroyed, fields and gardens have been flooded, and vital infrastructure has been damaged. Many affected families have lost their homes and are facing hunger, disease, and other serious consequences.
Numerous families living in the immediate vicinity of the Operation Rescue center in Namacata have also been affected. In response, we launched an emergency appeal with the goal of providing 30 families with a relief package containing two sleeping mats, 10 kg of maize flour, and a large sheet for protection.
The response to this appeal was overwhelming: by the end of March, we had received around three times the amount of donations that would have been needed to fund the originally planned emergency relief packages. This made it possible to expand the support. Temporarily, we are now able to provide meals for the children on four days per week instead of three. At the same time, we are evaluating how the remaining funds can be used most effectively, for example to help rebuild damaged homes or to purchase corrugated metal sheets for leaking roofs.
The overall goal of our work remains to help children find a way out of poverty in the long term and to improve their living conditions sustainably. In acute situations like this, however, targeted emergency assistance is also necessary in order to create a stable foundation in the first place. We are grateful for every additional contribution that helps make this continued work possible.
